FORMAL ARES NET

The formal ARES TRAINING NET is a directed net. It is structured and designed to teach and develop net discipline. This is accomplished under the direction of a Net Control Operator. Other formal nets which require maintenance of discipline and protocols include severe weather nets and nets formed to meet communications needs during disasters. National Traffic System nets which pass formal traffic are usually conducted in a formal or semi-formal setting. It is important for Net Control Station (NCS) Operators and Amateurs checking into the nets to have a thorough understanding of the net protocols for each net in which you operate. This means that potential NCS operators need to practice much like a musician practices before a performance.

The rules for a formal net are:

1. The frequency is usually closed to routine use during the net.

2. Because the frequency is closed, the net time should be only as long as necessary to carry out net business.

3. Traffic (messages) may be passed during the net.

4. Announcements of importance to ARES members may be passed during the net.

5. Informals (one station talking to another for personal contact) should be limited to making contact and then switching to another frequency or setting up a contact schedule (“Sked”) outside of the net time.

6. A net log should be kept.

7. If the net is a scheduled event, there should be a backup NCS assignment in case the NCS becomes unable to call the net.

8. Some formal nets are calling using a check-in list. If this is the case, stations should listen carefully and check in ohnly when they are called.

9. It is up to the NCS to maintain control of the net and assure that members abide by the rules. This is where the discipline comes in.

10. Stations checking in should be sure that their equipment is operating in such a manner that transmissions and readable as clear as possible under the given atmospheric conditions. The NCS has the responsibility of telling an operator when he/she does not have a clean signal.

Formal Net Control Operators should use a “PREAMBLE” to call the net. The preamble is a written script which guides the NCS through the net.

The following is an example of a net preamble:

QST…QST… THIS IS ______________ THE NET CONTROL STATION FOR THIS SESSION OF THE SOUTHWEST IOWA ARES TRAINING NET OPERATING THROUGH NØWKF IN GLENWOOD IOWA AND SEVERAL LINKED REPEATERS THROUGHOUT THE SOUTHWESTERN IOWA REGION.

MY NAME IS ___________________AND MY CALL AGAIN IS_________________

THIS NET MEETS EVERY_______________AT ________________LOCAL TIME.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS NET IS TO TRAIN AMATEUR RADIO OPERATORS IN NET OPERATIONS AND TO SHARE INFORMATION RELATED TO THE SOUTHWEST IOWA ARES PROGRAM.

THIS IS A DIRECTED NET. ALL TRANSMISSIONS WILL GO THROUGH THE NET CONTROL STATION.

If an alternate net control has been assigned, the skip the next section:

IS THERE A STATION LISTENING WHO WOULD ACT AS THE BACKUP NCS FOR THE EVENING?

If there is an alternate frequency system for the net, the NCS should describe how to go to the alternate system at this point.

ANY LICENSED AMATEUR RADIO OPERATOR MAY CHECK INTO THIS NET REGARDLESS OF ARES OR CLUB AFFILIATION. AN INFORMAL NET WILL FOLLOW THIS NET. STATIONS ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN BOTH NETS.

IF THERE IS ANY EMERGENCY OR PRIORITY TRAFFIC DURING THE NET, JUST USE THE WORD “EMERGENCY” OR “PRIORITY” AND YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY BE RECOGNIZED.

IS THERE ANY EMERGENCY OR PRIORITY TRAFFIC AT THIS TIME?

PAUSE AND LISTEN FOR ANY EMERGENCY TRAFFIC.

By reading a list of ARES Mobile Spotters only (or other specific list) – you don’t have to take random check ins.
AT THIS TIME I WILL START TAKING CHECKINS
The formal training net should not be a place for general comments and discussion. To facilitate that, the NCS should close the Formal Net. A general open informal net may then be opened.

This completes the list of Mobile Spotters (or other designated list)
THIS IS ______________NET CONTROL FOR THE SOUTHWEST IOWA ARES TRAINING NET. ARE THERE ANY STATIONS WHO HAVE BUSINESS OR WISH TO CHECKIN BEFORE I CLOSE THE NET?

Pause and listen.

HEARING NO FURTHER CHECK-INS, I WILL CLOSE THE NET AT THIS TIME. WE HAD ________ STATIONS CHECK IN TONIGHT.

I THANK ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION. STAY ON THE FREQUENCY FOR THE INFORMAL NET TO FOLLOW.

THIS IS _________________, CLOSING THE NET AT _____________LOCAL TIME
